Stereo audio records/playsback as Mono

Hi,
I’m using a Laptop with Windows 10, 2.1.2 Audacity and used the .exe installer.
I bought a Behringer UCA 202 and just noticed that stereo audio playback from a minidisc and other devices is being recoded in mono or is playing back in Mono, and there is significant loss in quality, besides the stereo.
Any clues why, what I’ve done wrong and how do I fix it please.

First pass reaction without any analysis at all, you’re recording your laptop built-in microphone and not the UCA 202.

The recording device in the Audacity device toolbar should say USB Audio Codec (attached).

Connect the UCA-202 and then start Audacity, not the other way around.

Hi, I’ve double checked and just test recorded some stereo audio from a minidisc.
The USB Audio codec appears where it should be for the input.
I can clearly hear that the sample audio is stereo, but the recording levels when checking levels are obviously mono, both channels exactly the same.
I have recorded a sample and the playback, either through the Behringer headphones port or switching to the line out on the laptop and the audio a very flat and lower quality mono.

I have asked some of the other contributors to the online radio station who also prerecord content and they are bemused as to why I can’t just record in audacity using the mini jack line in port. Some suggested switching to Mixpad.
Thanks.

Have you set the UCA 202 to stereo recording in Windows Sound? See this link http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/faq_recording_how_to_s.html#rinstereo .
