I have already a track. I want to play the track, at certain point pause, record my own voice, add this to the original track at the point I paused, then continue listening to the original track (from the point I left it + my addition), then pause again, insert my voice again and so on. I am talking about splitting/inserting/splitting/inserting, not overlapping . How can I do it easily?

Audacity 2.0.5 (from .exe file), Windows 7.
“File > Import > Audio” to import the file that you wish to work with.
Shift+A can be used to start and stop playback, but unlike using spacebar to start and stop, when you use shift+A to stop, the cursor remains at the place that playback stopped. So when playback gets to the point where you want to insert your own words and press shift+A to stop.
Ctrl+I to split the recording at the cursor position.
Thank you for your help.
However, when I press Shift-I get a pop-up message:
“device information is not available”
I tried on two different Windows 7 computers (Home premium and Professional), same error.
What should I do?
Steve made a small typo when he wrote out the steps. He meant CTRL + I. I’ve updated his steps.
SHIFT + I opens a dialogue where you should be able to change the input (recording) device. However the message indicates you don’t have any available recording devices, so you will have to fix that before you can record.
Right-click over the speaker icon by the system clock, then choose “Recording Devices”. Right-click over empty space and choose “Show Disabled Devices”. Right-click again and “Show Disconnected Devices”. Then right-click over each device and choose “Enable” if that is an option. See here for more help: Missing features - Audacity Support .
