Sound Suddenly Mute & Gone Dead

I have been using Audacity for months (Windows) with no problem at all - and then two days ago the sound suddenly went mute and won’t return. I have tried clearing history, uninstalling and reinstalling on a different platform, with no luck. There’s no sound issues with any other computer use, just Audacity podcast editing. Anyone else had this problem or have any advice? Kinda urgent. Thanks!

In case you don’t know, Audacity’s playback volume slider is now “hidden” under the playback meters (and the recording volume slider under the recording meters).

There are additional volume & balance sliders to the left of the waveform.

And if you have a USB microphone or anything in addition to your soundcard, check the Playback Device setting.

You can also check your Permissions/Privacy Settings to make sure Audacity is allowed to use your soundcard.

Thank you SO much for your fast response. There doesn’t appear to be anything wrong with the permissions or my sound card et all. I was editing a podcast and, when I came back to it after a several hour break, the sound was mute. I thought I accidently hit a mute button but everything is fine. You mentioned a “hidden” playback slider. I have looked everywhere and don’t see what. Can you post a screenshot?

The volume sliders are the circles or “bubbles”.

It sounds basic, but it happened to me once…

If you have speakers, make sure they are still plugged in. If you are using monitor speakers, make sure the volume is turned up.

I also remember a time when I could get no sound and it started working again after I restarted the computer.
