Sound dies when running audacity

Whenever I run audacity the audio on my computer works for a brief moment, then all sound just dies right on the spot and I can’t get it back, I try switching audio inputs but nothing works. I read a post about a similar issue before and someone said the solution was to go into control panel and do something involving usb or something like that.
All I really need is a solution to this, if anyone can please help me out I would appreciate it.

Does this solve the problem?
http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/faq_playback.html#usb

No sadly as both of those things have been done before, I use a USB headset and have it set to default, and I already have done the thing in communications under sounds.
It’s not just audacity whose sound dies when I use it, my whole computer’s sound dies. Every last thing.
Sometimes it will wake up and I’ll get my sound back but that usually never happens.

We can’t help with almost no information to go on. What version of Windows and Audacity? See the pink panel at the top of the page.

Make and model number of the headset? Have you tried a different USB port?

What are you doing when you run Audacity - playing audio, recording your voice, recording your voice over a backing in Audacity…?

Gale

I’m using the most recent version of audacity and windows 8. I’m also pretty sure the sound dies on my computer no matter what I’m doing in audacity though maybe it’s just when I record my voice. I’m using a logitec wireless headset.

Please as requested give us all three Audacity numbers. See the pink panel at the top of the page.

Perhaps if you can be more specific about that it may help diagnosis. Are your recording only your voice, or are you trying to record your voice and computer playback at the same time?

Model number?

If you record your voice using the computer’s internal microphone, with no other audio playing, and the wireless headset unplugged, do you lose audio in your web browser or Windows Media Player?

Gale

it’s version 2.1.1, and it’s just my voice I was recording. Also I don’t have the number for the headset, however I think the audio also dies if I’m just editing audio as well, I might have to double check but if I do I’d have to restart my computer to get the sound back.

If you don’t have the issue with the built in sound card then you could use a wired headset with pink and green connectors.

You can go to the Logitech site and see if your headset requires special drivers.

Did you try another USB port?

If you require further assistance please go to Help > Audio Device Info… top right of Audacity and attach the file of that information. Please see here for how to attach files: https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/how-to-attach-files-to-forum-posts/24026/1

Gale

I’m pretty sure it had nothing to do with my headset, as I mentioned earlier my sound dies for my entire computer, even if I change it off my headset, even if I unplug my headset, if I have my audio output on my default speakers the sound still dies.
Please do not try to deflect the issue to something that is not related just to end this topic.

Try this:

  1. Start playing some music in your preferred media player - ensure that it plays.
  2. Launch Audacity, but do not do anything in Audacity, just let the program open.
  3. Is your media player still playing?

Actually we are all trying patiently to understand the issue from the information you give. You have not given us the Audio Device Info we requested, which would aid our understanding.

It would have helped to say that at the outset. Before now, you said

I use a USB headset and have it set to default

So obviously we are going to assume the issue is the headset.

Gale

Note that would very likely briefly interrupt playback in the media player, even under “normal” circumstances, just while Audacity was launching and querying devices.

Another question - are you launching Audacity in the same user account that is running the other audio? Windows 8 and 10 will “quite likely” suspend audio in an app playing in one account when you switch to another account.

Gale

I just figured something out, the cause of my sound dying is when I try to play audio in audacity. There’s a clicking noise and then all my sound cuts out. This happens whenever I try to play audio in the program.

From the Audacity “Help” menu, select “Audio device info”, then copy ALL of the information from the pop-up message box and paste it into your reply.

Before I post this I just want to make an addendum to my previous statement, the sound doesn’t die when I try to play something, it dies shortly after I open audacity, even if I’m not doing anything.

ANYWAYS, here you go

OK, so you have a logitech wireless headset that is connected in some “wireless” way to your computer, and when you run Audacity the sound output stop from somewhere…

Can you be a bit clearer about what your set-up is and what is happening?

ok so my headset connects through a usb device wirelessly. My audio however gets cut off when I boot up audacity and it sits for the first few seconds.
I have however been able to somehow fix it by switching between my main speakers and back to my headset which hasn’t normally worked before, but I’d much rather prefer it if the sound never cut out at all.

Do you mean sound from the wireless headphones stops?

When you switch to speakers. does sound come from the speakers?

Is there a model number for your wireless headset?

You have said you feel the issue is not with the headset, so for diagnosis would you mind to just disconnect the headset and let’s concentrate on the Speakers / Headphones (Realtek).

Play a song in Media Player then launch Audacity. Does the song stop audibly playing if you do nothing in Audacity?

What happens if you launch Audacity with headset disconected and Media Player closed but import a file into Audacity and play it? Can you hear the file in Audacity?

I already asked but BlackHoleDragon did not know the model number.

Can you tell us the make and model number of the computer? If you tell us that we may be able to check if your Realtek sound device has proper drivers. If it does not have proper drivers your sound may not work properly, and the wireless mic might be affected too.

Also, have you always had this problem with Audacity? Or if the problem has only just started, did you change the audio system or add new audio applications just before the problem started?
