I know there are several posts on this error message and I read a few but I’d like to know what is going on. Actually the problem seems to be solved-that is “check the recording device settings and sample rate”
I’ve recorded many times from downloaded music into Audacity. The only thing I changed to make it work was to go from MME to WASAPI. That’s after removing Audacity 2.1 and reinstalling. I use Win 8.1 on my pretty new HP desktop. What would cause this after years of using it with MME? Thank you
Audacity doesn’t make a 2.1. The current version is 2.1.0. If you really are using 2.1, then it may be a bogus version. Get the latest release from here.

Reinstalling Audacity doesn’t reset Audacity. In windows, the installer will ask you if you want to reset preferences. Say yes.
Self-recording is not a supported Windows service. Sometimes it works by accident, but nowhere does it say the machine is guaranteed to record internet music and Microsoft has been making it harder and harder through each release. WASAPI was promoted as a way to do that with less cooperation from Microsoft.

If WASAPI loopback records for you and MME stereo mix does not, you can use WASAPI. There is the advantage that WASAPI is entirely digital.
@Koz, WASAPI actually depends on an audio service explicitly provided by Microsoft.
If stereo mix does not work any longer it could be an update to your sound card driver that is the cause. Perhaps the update reflected concern by your computer manufactuer about piracy and removed stereo mix. You can check in Windows Sound if stereo mix has been disabled and can be re-enabled.
