Songs on Audacity

Hi, everyone. I have some songs from certain albums that I can import to Audacity. Is there an effect that can help me turn the songs into karaoke?

Isolating or removing vocals from a song.

Another option is to find MIDI versions of the songs. MIDI doesn’t support vocals.

If you need a true karaoke format that displays lyrics or a DVD that shows lyrics as subtitles you’ll need different-special software for that.

Or, to some extent you can “fake it” with MiniLyrics. MiniLyrics can display synchronized lyrics (.LRC format) and there is a “karaoke mode” but it doesn’t show the lyric timing perfectly.

Hi, I can’t seem to figure out how to download OPENVINO. Was I supposed to download the raw data file on Github? If so, how do I then install the effect on Audacity?

Never mind. I figured it out, thank G-d. Thanks!

Is there a way to separate applause from vocals in a song?

Is there a way to separate applause from vocals in a song?

MAYBE with AI but you’ll probably have to search the Internet. “Traditionally” it’s been impossible to un-mix, although there have been some “tricks” with left, right, and phantom center.

You’re in luck, this is exactly what you’re looking for! Check out this video—it shows how to cleanly separate vocals from applause (or even whistling). While the demo focuses on dialogue, the same technique works perfectly for songs. It’s a great way to isolate the vocals from the background sounds like applause!

I didn’t see the video yet but I want to clarify what I want. I don’t want to eliminate the applause completely. I want both the applause and the vocals on separate tracks.

Hi! :waving_hand: Yes, Audacity has a built-in effect that can help you make karaoke tracks by removing or reducing vocals.

Go to Effect → Vocal Reduction and Isolation, then choose:
Action: “Remove Vocals” or “Isolate Vocals,” depending on what you want.

This effect works by targeting sounds that are centered in the stereo mix (where vocals usually sit) and removing or lowering them. It works best on studio-recorded songs where the vocals are cleanly centered — results vary depending on how the track was mixed.

:light_bulb: Tips:

  • Always use a stereo track, not mono.

  • If vocals remain, try Effect → Equalization (Filter Curve EQ) to cut frequencies around 1 kHz–4 kHz, where vocals are strongest.

  • Save your project before applying effects — some songs need a few tries to get the best karaoke balance.
