Some minor UI suggestions

Hello!

I have been using Audacity for several years now, it’s a beautiful software. I would contribute to the project’s code if I had the time. Since I don’t have the time, I just have a few small suggestions after taking a quick look at Audacity 4, updated from an older version that works beautifully on its own:

  • Under “Customize Toolbar” could we have a toolbar option for “Project Rate”? I know there’s a rate option in “Audio Setup” but that’s something I’d rather not sort through a menu every time for. Essentially, I’d like to be able to set the Exporting Sample Rate ahead of time and maybe preview it as such in the editor BEFORE choosing to resample tracks. This is just a convenience thing, but I don’t think it would hurt anyone to implement the option.
  • Put the delete “X” back on tracks…? Same “menu navigation” problem as above. In the meantime, I can just delete using the delete key though, which is nice.
  • Selection should act as playback boundary. When I select audio, I want to press “Space” to hear only the part of the timeline I selected.
  • Where is the “Change Speed” effect? I see something in the track, but there’s no effect for it? There’s no easy way to modify strictly the playback speed affecting both pitch AND tempo?
  • REALLY IMPORTANT (to me): Could we have an option for how looping playback is set up? It would be INCREDIBLE if the alternative was there to just select a bit of audio and “Shift+Space” to play on loop. This is how Audacity used to work, and while the modern looping system can be fine for some folks, the “Shift+Space” is SO much simpler and really good for my workflow, which often includes testing different looped sections quickly in succession. If this isn’t implemented, I might be stuck using Audacity 3.0.5 for the rest of my life; which would be sad.

I’d love to stay up to date with Audacity, because it’s getting much better in many ways! Effect improvements, simplicity, etc. But the new looping controls from a while ago SUCK!! Could you add a “Quick loop and play selection” shortcut key option? That should do it, I think.

Thank you for your time. Keep up the good work. Keep this program nice…
