Slow face on input audio

I have Audacity 3.7.8. I use it for voice recording. In recent months, I’ve found that on some occasions, my voice will slowly fade away over a period of maybe 5 seconds. It’s intermittent and I can’t seem to connect it to anything. If I walk away or reboot, everything is usually back to normal in pretty short order. Anyone have any suggestions for me?

5 seconds seems too long for it to be “audio enhancements”, (they act in less than a half a second).

If phantom-power was cut from a condenser microphone that could create a slow fade out ~5 seconds.

More and more (especially USB) microphones have built-in noise reduction that will do things like that.
