Is there a tool/edit function that allows you to completely make parts of a audio file silence instead of cutting sections out?

Edit menu > Remove Audio or Labels > Silence Audio.
It has a keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+L (Windows/Linux), which is probably Command+L on a Mac.
