Hello, I have used audacity in the past to transfer vinyl records to mp3 files. However, with a new computer, and the new release of 2.0.5 I am not getting good results. I am using the USB cable from the special turntable I purchased and I go directly with the USB from the turntable to my PC. I remember with previous versions of audacity, I had to get a very specific setting within the software or otherwise I got a loud screeching noise when I tried to do transfers. This is not happening now; when I turn the turntable on and click the record button, it records the music I am playing from the turntable. But, the results are not good. They sound very tinny, muffled and a bit distorted. You can hear the music and the vocalist OK, but the results are not anything I would want to playback and keep. Anyone know what settings I can use here to get better results? The record I was trying this is in mint condition. thanks.
Try reading this Tutorial in the Manual: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/recording_with_usb_turntables.html .
Audacity doesn’t modify the recording as you make it. The only setting likely to cause the recording to sound poor would be if you recorded with the Audacity project rate (bottom left) below 44100 Hz. That would make it sound dull because it would lack high frequencies.
Assuming this new computer runs Windows Vista or later, you probably want to turn Windows sound “enhancements” off. See http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/faq_recording_troubleshooting.html#enhancements .
Say exactly which Windows version you have if that does not help.

Is this the same turntable you used before?
If you have a new-cheap turntable/cartridge and you think it may have poor sound quality, this page has information/ratings on many USB turntables. If yours has a ceramic cartridge, that could be the problem.
