Setting up Track Numbers for audio CD, flash drive, etc.

Hi,
I am preparing about 16 MP3’s for distribution via a shared Dropbox folder. The recipients might do any combination of the following:

– Download the MP3’s to an iPod or other MP3 player.
– Download the MP3’s to a computer and copy them to a flash drive, then play the flash drive on their car stereo.
– Download the MP3’s and import them into iTunes, Windows Media Player, VLC, or any other media player.

I would like to specify the order of play as other than the Track Title.

I think I have the following options:

– Prefix the file names with numbers 1, 2, 3, … 15, 16.

– Specify the Track Number in Audacity’s Metadata Editor: 1, 2, 3, … 15, 16.

– Do either or both of the above with leading zeros: 01, 02, 03, … 15, 16.

I will certainly follow the carefully written advice in the Audacity manual, but it does not discuss how to handle track numbers.

My apologies if this has already been asked. I have looked again and again but not found a reliable answer. This answer was close!

Note that I have Audacity 2.1.2 installed on both Mac OS X 10.11.6 and Windows 8.1. I’m currently doing this project using the Mac.

Thanks for any help you can give.

You could set both titles and track numbers starting at 01 then all cases are covered for an MP3 player.

Ideally you would give people WAV’s for burning to Audio CD, and in that case you could provide a Cue sheet for your users to burn from which will set the playing order.
