I fear there isn’t a way to do this, but I wanted to check with the experts first. I’m trying to edit my podcast, where we both recorded on separate microphones but they both were connected to one receiver, which was plugged into our camera. I got the audio file into audacity, but it looks like this, with both our mic tracks on one track
Is there anyway to split these out onto two separate tracks? Because of the way the tracks work right now, I’m unable to silence one track while the other plays, etc. Would greatly appreciate any advice!!
After you split the stereo tracks to two mono tracks, Check that the the sync-lock checkmark on in the Tracks menu is checked. This will keep them synchronized, so when you delete audio from one clip, it will delete from both.
Please note the illustration is Split Stereo Track. Not Split To Mono. I would totally Split To Mono so both people will appear on both left and right after you edit them. Audacity will mix them into one presentation when you export.
If you leave them left and right, the conversation will flip between your ears as they speak giving you a headache.
There are safety considerations, too. After you split to mono, Export a perfect quality WAV (Microsoft) protection backup so you can edit later if you feel like it. After you finish editing, you can Export a WAV Edit Master with a different name. You will probably export an MP3 for posting on-line. You can’t edit an MP3 later without causing sound damage.
I can hear you saying you’re going to Save an Audacity Project. You can if you want to, but they can be brittle. Search the forum for “My Project Won’t Open. What am I going to do?”
You were both in the same room, right? both voices are going to quietly leak into each other unless you have a real studio. Do that sync thing so they don’t drift into echoes of each other.
