Saving recorded cassetes.

I have not used Audacity in some time now… I am recording my cassette audio books so that I can put them on my MP3 player. I am still confused as to where and how to save them so that they play individually and not one right after the other… I guess I am talking about putting them in a Library that can be put on the MP4 player if that is possible…
I taped all my old records some years ago, but forgot how i did it. But I put them on CD’s and never put them in a Library. Any further help you can provide on these subjects would be great help.

Each chapter (or sub-chapter, etc.) should have its own file. The easiest way to do that is to select/highlight the audio you want and then File → Export Selected Audio chapter-by-chapter. Or if you find it easier, there is a way to split the recording using labels.

If you name each chapter with the chapter number (i.e. 01 - Dick Meets Jane.mpg) Windows will sort the chapters in order. It’s up to you where you save the files. You can add them to your media player’s library without physically moving them. But of course, every book should be in it’s own folder.

You can also use metadata (“tags”) for the chapter number, author, chapter name, etc. But, note that the standard metadata fields are for music so you’ll have to use the Track Number as the chapter number, the Artist field as the author, and the Album field for the book title, etc.

All media players can read the track number and play the files in order, so it’s not strictly necessary to use the chapter-number in the file name. Then, you can configure your media player to play one selected chapter, or to play the whole “album” in sequence.
