please help…maybe a stupid question, but I’m stumped. Just finished three short projects and saved as mp3. when I went back to re-open they would not. they are file type 15 or 15c or 00. please, i need your help. how do I convert these to mp3, and how do I prevent this from happening in the future.I used export and it seemed that everything was as usual. thank you
perhaps you need more info: using version 2.6 on win 7. have installed lame months ago. please…any help would be great. thanks
What do you mean “file type 15 or 15c or 00”?
Do you mean that the file extension (the last part of the file name after the dot) is “15” or “15c” or “00”?
When you Exported the file as MP3, did you enter a name that ended with “.15” or “.15c” or “.00”?
Note that if you export using a file name that includes a dot character (“.”) then you must also add the correct file extension (for MP3 files that is “.mp3”)
Best to avoid dots or any special characters in file names.
Safe characters for file names are:
a-z A-Z 0-9 - _ space
thanks… no, I saved as mp3. when i re-opened it was not recognized ad would not play. if i hovered oveer the file it said type 15. question. should we add the .mp3 at the end of a name/file to be saved. I also have a new situation. I have been trying to work around it and now the file in open shows a red box.as it is selecting a pdf. I’m in trouble.
We don’t make Audacity 2.6. If that was not a typo for 2.0.6, please obtain 2.0.6 here Audacity ® | Download for Windows.
If the file name you want must have a dot in it, then as Steve said, you must add
.mp3
to the end of the file name. See here for more explanation: Audacity Manual.
Audacity does not import PDF files. If it is an MP3 that you were trying to save before, add
.mp3
to the end of the file name.
If that did not help, please attach a screenshot of the problem. Please see here for how to attach files: https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/how-to-attach-files-to-forum-posts/24026/1

to Steve and Gale:
thanks so much for all your help and patience. You were both right on the money, I was late to the party. Won’t bother you again till the next crisis. We as an audacity family are fortunate to have you as relatives.Have a great day.
Here are some hints for you when you use File > Open… or File > Import… .
If you can’t see an MP3 you saved in the dialogue because you saved it with wrong extension, change “Files of type” to “All files”.
You can rename files in the open or import dialogues. Click on the file to select it, then press F2 on your computer keyboard.
