I wish to record in one window, while edit in another. According to a forum post in 2012, this is not possible in Audacity. Hoping that’s changed and folks can tell me how
I hope you do not want to edit the same file you are just recording.
If you want to edit a different file, you could try to run two instances of Audacity at the same time. I haven’t tried it, but it could work when you have one version of Audacity in your Applications folder and the other elsewhere. Perhaps they also need to have different names so that the computer doesn’t get confused? Just try.
However, I would recommend to go a different way. Get a second computer, one for recording and the other for editing. If both computers have a similar version of Audacity installed, you can easily transver the file from the recording computer to the computer you use for editing. I have a quite old MacBook Air (macOS 10.13 “High Sierra” is the maximum OS which can be installed) as my “music computer” for recording (Audacity 3.5.1) and for playing (iTunes) music, and a quite recent iMac for editing (Audacity 3.6.1).
It’s easy enough to try. I just tried opening two instances on Windows and it didn’t work.
I wrote about this a week ago or so.
The only way I could get two instances of Audacity at the same time was to open one by the usual method, then opening the second one by right clicking on an audio file, using Open With and picking Audacity, then deleting the clip.
If you are using it as a buffer to cut and paste from, just close it when you are done. If you want to save any audio from this instance, use Save As, or you might write over the file you used to open Audacity.
