New Audacity file disappeared before I could save it. Error message said I can retrieve the file manually. How do I do that? I am using Windows 7.
Fair warning that depending on what your computer was doing during the crash (and why it crashed), you could be trying to put an explosion back together.
The error message says I can retrieve the file ‘manually.’ What does this mean. HELP!
Did you look at the page DVDdoug posted?
http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/recovering_crashes_manually.html
That has recovery instructions.

This sounds like you are using an obsolete 1.2.x version of Audacity. Please read the pink panel at the top of the page carefully.
If you said Yes to deleting temporary files, there is nothing you can recover, short of using special undelete software.
If you said No to deleting temporary files, use Edit > Preferences… then click the “Directories” tab to see where Audacity’s temporary folder is. Then follow http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/recovering_crashes_manually.html#1.2_Audacity_Recovery_Utility to obtain the 1.2 Recovery Utility. You won’t be able to recover files in the correct order if you were editing the project, only if you had an unedited recording.
Note that because you are using an obsolete version of Audacity, the location of your Audacity temporary folder will not be the same as the above page says.
As soon as you have recovered your files, please update to the current Audacity 2.1.2 from http://audacityteam.org/download/. Audacity 1.2 is not meant for Windows 7 and will quite likely crash when you press Stop after recording.
