Restoring my project

I am a first time Audacity user.
I tried to rename an aup file and found out the hard way not to do that.
I read some forum posts and renamed it back to what it was. The file now opens with a “missing block files” error message. I tried selecting option 2: “Treat missing audio as silence (this session only)”
I get another “orphan files” error message and “selected continue without deleting”
The time of the track appears to be what it was when i finished working last night (5:05.0) but there is no apparent audio.

I’m hopeful. Any help recovering what’s missing would be really appreciated and save me hours. I have a back up but don’t want to start over.

Using Audacity 2.3.3 and Windows 10.
Thanks, ELee

You win. Once a project starts to fall apart like this, it’s usually the end of the world.

Just to cover it, the AUP file is a text file. You can read it with any text editor. The original Project name is burned into it.

Projects can have many hundreds of individual files and it’s easy to stop the program or take some other action before they all get saved.

How did you save your backup and does it open? I think I would restart the machine before trying. Clear out the trash from your edit.

Thanks. I found my way to the text editor and source name. I had started again with my back up because I need to submit this project for a course and was worried about further complications. Things seem to be going well, but I am going to follow your instructions for the old file so I know what’s up in future. Aren’t mistakes great teachers…
Thanks again.

If you have original work as a simple Project, it’s a terrific idea to Export it as WAV (Microsoft) 16-bit as backup. Copy that off to a thumb drive or other storage service. Do Not use MP3 anywhere in production. If it’s not a simple mono or stereo project (one or two blue waves), then you may be stuck hoping nothing else fails.
