Removing coughing

I recorded a local theatre group performance. I am quite new to audio editing and while I’ve got to grips with amplifying the speech where necessary I need assistance in removing background noises from the audio (coughing, babies crying etc).

Is this possible without removing the speech/music/vocals from the stage? If so what is the best way to go about this.

Thanks

If they occur during silences, then you can simple edit (cut/delete) them out.
If they occur over the top of sounds that you want to keep then you’re probably stuck with them, though it may be possible to make them less pronounced.
The manual method for this would be to use the Envelope tool to drop the volume where the noise occurs. http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Envelope_Tool

Hi and thanks, I’ll give that a go, unfortunately most of it doesn’t happen during the silent bits! Typical lol
