reducing background white noise, increasing voice volume

Hello,

I recently recorded a lecture using a USB audio flash drive (I know, not the most ideal but the only thing I had on me at the time). Anyway, there are times when the white background noise is so loud that I can’t hear what the speaker is saying when she crosses the room. Is there a way to decrease the ‘white noise’ and increase the vocals using Audacity. I am new to this kind of software so any input is welcome, even if it’s a suggested other program to use.

Thanks for your input.

The only likely tool is Effect > Noise Removal, but please attach about 6 seconds of WAV file that has the noise on its own followed by the noise and voice mixed together.

See here https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/how-to-post-an-audio-sample/29851/1 for how to make a WAV audio sample and here https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/how-to-attach-files-to-forum-posts/24026/1 for how to attach it to your post.

Thanks
