I’ve done something terribly regrettable
I moved a file that I put a lot of work into, and now when I want to retrieve it all I get are error messages and all my work is gone.
Is all my long hard work assembling multi tracks gone forever? or can I reclaim the work somehow?
My version of Audacity is 2.3.3
My operating system is Windows 10
1st error page says: Couldn’t find the project data folder
2nd error page says: Could not load file
I initially saved my project on my desktop. When I was done I moved all the files to a file where I was going to collect all my work. When I went to open my project I got those error notices.
I tried to replace all the files back to their original position and it still wont open my project.
Note the basic names are the same. You can open the AUP file in a text editor such as Notepad (don’t save anything). The contents should look something like this.
Lots of English-like words in long sentences. Those are the instructions for Audacity to put your show back together from all the little files in the _DATA folder.
The _DATA folder stores your little e08 and d08 (and etc.) files in a special order. That’s where the AUP file is expecting to find them. If you don’t have a _DATA folder, that may be the end of the show.
If all you did was move things around, you may just have to find the _DATA folder and move it next to the AUP file. They have to be close to each other. The AUP file won’t go looking for it.
I’ve opened the aup in notebook (see previous post) and the file and the aup and data file are named the same, they are located in their original location and are next to each other and still I get the same error messages.
I’ve also tried to drag and drop the aup file into Audacity and it tells me to go to “file” and then “open” and still it does not recognize its own file.
