HELP RECORDING - I am trying to copy a cassette to an .mp3 file using Audacity 2.1.0 in Windows 10. I have the player plugged in to the front mic panel. I can hear the tape through the speakers. When I click the record button (Audacity) the timeline pulses but does not move or record. Nothing is recorded.
Make sure you’ve selected the microphone input as your Recording Device.

That can “work” but a microphone input is about 100 times too sensitive for a line-level or headphone-level signal. You won’t get the best quality and it’s probably a mono input. (Mono is not a problem if you have a mono recording.) If you have a desktop/tower computer, plug-into line-in (blue) on your soundcard. (And of course, select line-in as your recording device.) If you have a laptop with no line-in and you want better quality you can get a USB audio interface with line inputs.
