Recording waveform flatlines every 6 seconds [SOLVED]

Using Windows 7 Pro on a Lenovo 440 laptop, Audacity 2.1.0, .exe installer.
Recording by speaking into the internal mic (Realtek). The waveform displays correctly but every 6 or so seconds it vanishes to flatline, and also vanishes when I press Stop. It’s always done this, even on previous versions. I’ve checked device drivers up to date, looked through FAQ, etc but no resolution. I installed Audacity on a different laptop (Samsung) as a test, and it works fine. Any ideas gratefully accepted.

The directory you are recording to cannot be written to.

2.1.0 is old. I suggest you update to 2.1.2 from http://www.audacityteam.org/download/windows. Get the EXE installer. Halfway through installation, check (tick) the “Reset Preferences” box. When you launch Audacity, confirm you want to reset Preferences.

This will force the Audacity temporary directory to “C:\Users<your username>\AppData\Local\Audacity\SessionData”. You should be able to write there. You can also File > Save Project As… before recording and avoid the temporary directory altogether. Change the Project Save directory to somewhere like your own Music folder.
