I have Windows 7 Professional. 3 days ago I was to record a karaoke track on audacity 2.0.5. Meaning, I open audacity and hit record and it records the karaoke track from the karaoke website. I now have the latest version of audacity(Audacity 2.1.2. However, now when I try to record a Karaoke track from that karaoke website, i hear very faint music of the song i am trying to record(that too, after i use the amplify effect). I also hear my breathing in the background when playing that track. What am I not doing right. Please help. Thanks in advance
Chances are good that now you’re recording your built-in microphone. The techniques for self-recording are non-standard and can change if you change anything about your machine.

i was recording with the same machine. i have a focusrite soundcard. i tried what u suggested without any luck. any other suggestions. i mean, why did it work 3 days ago with the same soundcard but not today
i was recording with the same machine. i have a focusrite soundcard.
It is natural for a computer to record from the outside world via a microphone or cable connection. It’s also natural for the machine to play on-line-content such as YouTube so you can hear it.
What’s not natural is to play on-line content for your enjoyment and then record it. That means you have to use both sound pathways, record and play, at the same time. The earlier computers made this pretty easy with handy software, but it’s been made harder and harder with newer versions.
What does it say against the recording (microphone) setting in the device toolbar?

If the song is playing on an external sound card then you must use Windows WASAPI loopback recording:
- In Audacity, open Device Toolbar.
- In the first (Host) box of Device Toolbar, choose “Windows WASAPI”.
- In the second (Recording Device) box, choose the (loopback) input for the Focsrite. It will look something like “Focusrite Speakers (loopback)”.
- In the third (Recording Channels) box, choose mono or stereo.
- In the fourth (Playback Device) box, choose the Focusrite Speakers (or however they are called).
- Start playing the audio you want to record.
- Press the big red Record button in Audacity.

i tried system restore and i got back audacity 2.0.5. i am now able to record a karaoke track. i have windows 7 professional and it is a 64 bit system. i tried downloading several reverbs(ambience, anwida, tal reverb)but even after copying and pasting the .dll file into the audacity plugin, i don’t see these reverbs when i click effects in audacity. can i install 2 different versions of audacity?
You should in 2.0.5 or 2.1.2 be able to record from a web site that is playing in Focusrite using the WASAPI loopback method I mentioned. If you need to play the song on Focusrite there is no other method, short of creating the loopback with physical cables.
If you need to use the 2.0.5 version of Audacity, then after putting the DLL files in the Plug-ins folder, open Edit > Preferences…, choose the “Effects” section on the left, enable the box “Rescan VST effects…”, OK, and restart Audacity. When you restart, you will see a dialog and a checkbox for each new effect. Make sure the checkboxes are enabled, then OK.
If you mean install by running the installer, you can only do that if you install the different versions to different folders. It is not recommended and it should not be necessary.

my plugin folder shows some of the .dll vst plugins i downloaded but when i click effects, it does not show that plugin. vst plugins like ambience, krreverb, muverb,
Assuming you are now using Audacity 2.1.2, and clicking Effect > Add / Remove Plugins…, make sure the “All” radio button is selected in the “Plug-in Manger”.

i am using the Audacity 2.0.5 version

Here is the relevant text again:

the problem i am having with the latest version of audacity (2.1.2.) is that i am not able to record from a karaoke website i have been using for a long time. i am able to record a karaoke track using audacity 2.0.5. but not 2.1.2. i don’t know why, i have no clue.
In either version you can change to Windows WASAPI host and use the (loopback) recording device for whatever device is playing the sound. See http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/tutorial_recording_computer_playback_on_windows.html#wasapi.
Of course, you should have copyright holders’ permission to record from that karaoke site.

again, in the 2.0.5 version of Audacity, after i copy and paste the reverb dll file into audacity plugin folder, these reverbs do not show when i click effect. only anwida and glaceverb reverb shows. not other reverbs that i downloaded and placed their .dll file into the audacity plugin folder.
Again, in 2.0.5, you have to use Edit > Preferences…, choose the “Effects” section on the left, enable the box “Rescan VST effects…”, OK, and restart Audacity. When you restart, you will see a dialog and a checkbox for each new effect. Make sure the checkboxes are enabled, then OK. You have to do this every time you add a new effect into the “Plug-Ins” folder.
Also be aware that Audacity is a 32-bit application. So you must install only 32-bit plugins into Audacity’s Plug-Ins folder, even though you have a 64-bit version of Windows.

you are right Gale, i should have downloaded the 32 bit plugins. thank you so kindly.
