Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS
Audacity 2.2.2
Installed via Synaptic Pkg Mgr
Mic = HD Webcam C525: USB Audio (hw: 2,0)
Had not used Audacity to record for many months, was running ver 2.1.2.1… Attempted to record, and noticed skips in the recording. So, added the repository to my source, downloaded and installed newest version.
Problem still there… Have been to the help pages, searched the forum for this topic, tried everything listed (and more!), and still have the problem.
There are 12 gaps in every 5 seconds of recording. Writing to main drive, changing default location to one of my own choosing has no effect. Camera was plugged into USB hub, now direct, no change. Unmounted all my external drives, so they are not using processor (6 core)… have 64Gb RAM, never had any memory issues before…
I need to record a demo track to send off, so will bite the bullet and remove all the empty spaces so can get 'er done, but hope to do that only once! Otherwise a new recording program will be needed. Audacity works fine for editing/playing/etc., but recording not so good now, for some reason!
Yes, I have a sound card. And I used to have a couple of the cheap mics that came with old computers. Have no clue where they are, as I’ve used the present video camera and the one before it… about 6-7 yrs now? Never had a problem before. I have several mics with my PA, but the XLR connectors are a bit too large for the sound card jacks
Will have to start going thru boxes to see if I can find the old mics…
Here’s all the “stuff” that I have to choose from… Sheesh, used to be simple.
So what was different about your set-up when it worked without a problem, to now?
What exactly are you recording?
Is “Detect dropouts” enabled in “Preferences > Recording”? That is supposed to detect gaps in the recording and label them, though in Audacity 2.2.2 it only detects dropouts that are “downstream” from Audacity.

Time? Software updates? Hardware has not changed.

I’m playing my acoustic lap steel, sending songs to musical partners in HI, sending them arrangements.
Yes, the “Detect dropouts” is checked, but does NOT pick up these lapses in recording.
At this point in time, it’s easier to record what I need on my cell phone and send it via e-mail from phone!!!
So you are recording with your webcam so that you can use its built-in mic, is that right?
What happens if you record the webcam with a webcam recording app (such as guvcview)?
It could be a really obvious setting, such as the sample rate. When you start recording a new track, Audacity creates the new track at the same sample rate as the “Project Rate” (lower left corner of the main Audacity window). If I recall correctly, guvcview records audio at a sample rate of 22050 Hz. The default for Audacity is 44100 Hz. Very high sample rates, or rates that are not natively supported by the hardware are more likely to have clicks or dropouts.

I tried the 22050, & that did not make a difference, but in messing around with the settings, I discovered that changing the Sample Rate Conversion (Under “Quality”) to the best quality (slowest) setting, made the skips in the recording about 6x as long! Setting them to the lowest quality (fastest) makes them barely audible, but still there. The do NOT show up as gaps in the waveform when zoomed in…
BUT… setting the sampling rate to 32000 totally fixed it. Anything higher or lower, and the click becomes audible!
