I am using Audacity 2.0.5 version, Windows Vista system, I am a new user needing understanding for recording from a cassette tape to the computer. I have cassette jack coming out of “phone” jack and going into computer “blue” jack. I am able to record and “export” my project to file and listen to it. I need some help with cutting and monitoring etc. How do I cut while Recording? When I record in Audacity and “pause” the cassette and Audacity, I want to cut out empty space on Audacity back to where the recording sound waveforms ended, so I can “un-pause” to continue recording again. I cannot activate the “sizzors icon” to cut the blank area out, that I backed up from. If I press “stop” on Audacity, I can activate the “Sizzor” icon and cut the blank space out. However, when I re-start recording, I am starting a new track recording and it will be saved as a separate file when I “export.” How do I cut the blank space out and un-pause to continue the recording, without starting a new track? 2. Monitoring: I cannot get the “monitor” to work continuously so I can hear the recording taking place. I have to turn off recording and click “monitor” then again click “record” and I can hear the playback for a moment until it stops monitoring. (I set my “playback device” to Windows Direct Sound, Primary Sound Driver, Primary Sound Capture Driver, Mono Channel. I have tried it different ways but cannot get the Monitor to stay on nor do I understand the proper sequence of events with the buttons on how to turn it on and keep it on.) 3. I have a cassette talk tape to record that is 2 tapes long. What do you suggest as a best method to end one tape and begin the 2nd tape? Should I begin a new project with each tape? 4. Also, Using this email service does not allow me to use your font controls on top (bold, underline, colors etc.) Whenever I click on a font control buttons , it prints the code by my word highlighted. when I want to color a word, all I get is the control code by the word highlighted. What do I have to do to use your code icons on my email words ? THANKS
You can’t edit while recording.
It’s usually easier to edit after the recording, but if you prefer to edit one cassette track at a time, stop, edit then hold SHIFT when clicking Record (or hold SHIFT and press R on your keyboard). This will make the recording start from the end of the track.
Starting or stopping recording will stop monitoring because there are technical obstacles to monitoring always being on.
So again it’s better to record the whole track at once.
It’s the same issue as whether you start a new Audacity track or a new Audacity project for the second side of a single tape - your choice, in most circumstances. However -
- Audacity projects can get slow to respond if they contain a lot of audio.
- At 44100 Hz project rate (see bottom left of the Audacity window) you cannot reopen a saved project where a track contains more than 13.5 hours of audio. This will be fixed in the next 2.0.6 release of Audacity when that comes out.
- If you want to export your recording as WAV, it should not contain more than two hours of audio to be compatible with all audio players.

Audacity edits files on your computer. You can pause & re-start recording, but you cannot edit “live”. That’s how all audio/video editing is done on a computer.

If you click “Preview”, you can see what your post will look like. When you are composing & editing, you will see the [u]BBCode[/u].
BTW - You post was hard to read. It would help a LOT if you can write in PARAGRAPHS.
This isn’t an e-mail service, except that if you subscribe to this topic, you will be e-mailed when someone responds.
I agree with Doug - hitting ENTER twice to split long text into paragraphs is very helpful to allow quicker reading of posts.

I quibble with Audacity not being able to edit while paused. This is almost a daily issue on the Forum.
Even if you can work around it with SHIFT + A to stop and set the cursor at the stop point, or SHIFT + R to append record, other editors let you edit while paused.
You have to do something sensible if you delete audio, but lots of people want to pause then delete one side or other of the pause point. I think it would be much more intuitive if this was allowed and not too hard to devise reasonable rules to cope with deleted audio.
CoolEdit even lets you delete while playing, though I don’t like that if you delete an area over the actual point where it’s playing, it continues to play what’s deleted then (audibly) omits subsequent audio that’s still in the waveform.
