Recording level drops on long notes

Windows 10 32 bit
Audacity 2.3.3

I’m trying to record a clarinet track using the microphone in my webcam. When I play a long note - around 2 or 3 seconds - the recording level drops almost to nothing after about a second on each note. The level is nowhere near saturation. Can anyone explain please and suggest a remedy?

Make sure Windows “enhancements” are turned OFF.

Automatic Noise Reduction doesn’t “know” what noise is. It just figures that any sound that hangs around long enough must be noise and we’d better get rid of it. Windows machines come out of the box all ready for voice, conferencing and chat. Not Music.

Thanks for this. Are you saying that I’m not going to be able to use Audacity for music recording? Is there no way to turn off this feature? BTW it only happens with MIC recording, not with Stereo Mix.

Turn it off in the Windows Sound control panel. See the link in DVDdoug’s post.
