Recording level controls speaker output

When recording from radio I set my recording level at 80. when I do this my speaker output also goes to 80, making it impossible to listen to on headphones. When I reduce the volume from my sound icon on the toolbar the recording also reduces, but recording level reverts to 100%. Now and again it almost works separately but suddenly blasts my ears. Is there a way of getting input level and listening level separate.

If you are recording from your browser with Audacity 3.3.2 with WASAPI Speaker/Headphone (loopback), you can adjust the volume going to your headphone/speaker via the Recording Mixer control. Neither recording nor playback mixer level affects the recorded level.

If you are recording from an external radio, please specify your hardware arrangement.
