Recording from XITEL INPORT device

I am hoping someone can help me out, I am not a PC guru or music guru. Our church has a sound mixer that is connected to a XITEL INPORT device. That device has a USB connector that can be connected to a PC. The person previously responsible for recording our services has moved. He somehow used LPRecorder to record the service (from the XITEL device) then used n-track to edit the wav file (taking out silent parts and increasing sound levels for speaking parts). I was hoping to use Audacity to both record and edit. I downloaded Audacity (1.2.6) to my laptop (Windows Vista Basic) and then plugged the USB from the XITEL device into the PC. According to the help, there is supposed to be a Input Selection on the Mixer toolbar, but there is not. My first question would be, can I record from the XITEL device, and if I can, what may I be missing.

Thanks,
Stan

if you can record with the INPORT software , then audacity can edit.
depending on the drivers audacity may not work with it for recording.
but if you poke around the various option setting pages and can find something that lets you select usb as input that could be the cure.
do you know the type of drivers you are using?
full details on hardware and software settings is helpful for answering.

The device has to be visible in the Windows Control Panels before Audacity can deal with it.

It would be good to know exactly which Audacity you have. Help > About Audacity (I think).

I do not have any software for the INPORT device. That may be the piece I am missing. I will have to contact the other person and see if he has the software that came with the device. I did not see where I could download the software.

Thanks,
Stan

It may not need it. Did you try to find it in Windows Control Panels? If it’s simple enough, the major operating systems have all that stuff built-in.

no software? what did the other guy use to record with?
you didn’t get any cd with that device?
i am not a pc guru, but i thought if you had audio on a usb connection that you needed another driver. best to google for latest one, or maybe find out that there is none needed.

I went up to the church today and tried your suggestion - sound from control panel. The line-in was active and was aware of the Inport connection but there was no meter on right. I made it the default and then a meter to the right appeared. I had to disable the Microphone for it to work though. I was the able to start Audacity and record successfully. At this point, I think I am good to go. Thanks for all your help.
