Recording from USB cassette player

I have recorded from a usb cassette that cme with A previously with success. SEVERAL attemps later, I continue to get a flat line instead of soundwaves and nothing is being recorded. I have gone through the directions and suggestions under “Why do I get only a flat line and no sound” many times, plugged, unplugged, chnaged port, restarted pc, and reloaded Audacity. I am using Windows XP and do not see option to select “USB Audio Codec”, although I assume it is not seeing the USP. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

When going to Edit on toolbar, only choices for Audio I/O are Microsoft or Realtec, have tried both. Cannot find USB anywhere!!

I started a new topic for you. We can’t answer multiple people in the same topic.

If Windows cannot see your USB device then Audacity cannot record from it. Try another USB cable.

Sorry but that sounds like you are using Audacity 1.2. Please make sure at Help > About Audacity… that you have the latest Audacity 2.0.5. If not, please download 2.0.5 here: http://audacity.googlecode.com/files/audacity-win-2.0.5.exe .

We will not help you with 1.2 because it is obsolete now (see the pink panel at the top of this page).

Please be careful with Windows XP. Microsoft are no longer officially supporting it, so it will be unpatched against any new security vulnerabilities that appear.

Make sure you have XP Service Pack 3. You can still download Service Pack 3 from Microsoft if necessary: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389/en-gb .

Ensure you have a good third-party anti-virus application. Be aware though that this will not give you complete protection against a previously unknown attack.

For some extra protection you can install http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/jj653751 .

If it is not practicable for you to update to the much more secure Windows 7 or Windows 8, you can consider installing a Linux operating system instead. Most versions are free and all are very secure.
