I am in the process of trying to record my old vinyl albums onto my laptop. I am using WIndows Vista and Audacity 2.0.6, I used the .exe file to install. I have my stereo system hooked up to my laptop via the record out on the amp, with the RCA jacks going inot an RCA-to-1/8th inch converter, which is then plugged into the chord that goes into my line-in on my laptop - it’s an HP dv4-1435dx. When I record using Windows Sound Recorder everything comes out perfectly, but it’s a hasssle using that because I have to stop and start each song separately (I don’t want to just record album sides). When i use Audactiy to record a song, the volume is very low and seems like there’s a lot of reverb as well. I used all the default settings. Is there some setting(s) I need to change to get the sound louder and not have so much reverb? I have the recording volume in Audacity all the way up.
Do you hear the dog barking, too? Chances are you are recording the laptop built-in microphone, not the turntable connection. You could also be recording Stereo Mix or one of the other self-recording connections. Do you like to record YouTube music? Then it may be this one.

That’s good news! Audacity should be able to capture the same digital audio stream. You’ll just need to figure-out why the configuration is wrong.

Since you are getting good results (with Windows Sound Recorder) you may be OK… But most laptops only have mic-in and headphone-out. The information I found online could be wrong, but it says your computer has a mic input and two headphone outputs. Usually, you’ll get better results with a line input.
Thanks for the feedback. I assumed that since it worked OK for Sound Recorder the mic input would work fine for anything else. Sounds like that’s not the case. I went to the section for ‘connecting’, sounds like I need something that will convert to a line-in. Live and learn.
