Recording from different sources

Hi, - I record a weekly radio show using Audacity, and have done this through most of lockdown. I have Windows 10 and am using Audacity 2.42. My setup uses a Behringer Xenyx QX1204 USB mixing desk and my laptop with Zara Free radio. I’ve just changed my laptop and now cant get record both the music from the PC and the Voice via the mixer I can record individually by changing the settings. Current settings are Mic (USB Audio CODEC) 2 (Stereo Recording Channels) and Speaker/ Headphone (Realtek High Definition) and I’ve tried lots of combinations. What am I missing? Thanks in advance - I did search topics and the manual but couldn’t find. Apologies if this has already been answered.

OK, so I think you are going to find it is not possible to use Audacity to record from more than one source at a time. I don’t know how you did this before. Audacity will record from your mixer OR Audacity will record from your PC but not from BOTH at the same time.

You could route audio from your headphones to your mixer, mix it with voice there, then input the mix into Audacity.

Or you could use a third party tool such as Voicemeeter or Virtual Audio Cable to route the two different sources to Audacity.

I hope this helps.

am using Audacity 2.42.

Is that correct? There are “fake” Audacity programs offered with that version number. The current version is 2.4.2

You’re correct - my mistake it’s 2.4.2

Thanks for the advice.

It has definitely worked in the past I have a cable from the headphone socket to the Line in7/8 - and one out from phones to a splitter (headphones and speakers) and the mixer connects via USB - I’ll keep investigating.
