Recording does not work

I have made sure the correct Mic is set up and the volume is ok I cam hear the mp3 i imported but when I click record nothing is showing up no waveform nothing!

I should have said I am trying to do my voice overs to introduce a song

Permissions/Privacy Settings.

You can check your microphone with Try Listen To This Device to make sure Windows is getting a signal.

Also… In case you don’t know this, the recording volume slider is now 'hidden" under the recording meters (and the playback volume is behind the playback meters).

If none of that helps, tell us exactly what mic you are using or if you are using the mic built-into your laptop, etc.

i finally got it to record but now I am struggling to get my volume to a decent level so far all I have discovered is the things in Effect and that seems like it should be some way to set my record volume and bass treble to my liking i do not see a slider under the Mic id take a screen shot and show you what I see but how do I post an image?

I like my volume in my Voice overs to be -3.0db and I normalize finished shows to that level too not that its a big deal but it is what I am used to

Your recording levels are fine. It’s a good idea to leave some headroom for unexpected peaks anyway.

The Amplify or Normalize effect allow you to set a new peak level.

You can do what you want. -3dB is the maximum allowed for ACX audiobooks (for unknown reasons). Nothing bad happens when you get close to 0dB. If you “try” to go over 0dB you’ll get clipping (distortion).

Bass & Treble, EQ, etc. are under Effects → EQ and Filters.

Run the Amplify or Normalize effect last because most other effects will change the overall level.

If you can’t go louder, it’s (probably) a hardware limitation. Of course it also depends on how loud the sound is.

Thank you for all your help, I will be working my butt off to get this audacity under my belt
