I downloaded Audacity a month ago to record audiobooks online to play them in my car. The program worked perfectly playing the book on the laptop and recording it to and mp3 file. When a new update came thru the program stopped working. When trying to record nothing happens except I can capture me speaking. What am I missing???
Are you on Windows? A Windows update?
You should be using WASAPI loopback. Instructions are here.
(If you are recording yourself, you’re obviously recording from the microphone rather what’s coming out of the soundcard.)
You should select the loopback device where the sound is coming-out (usually your regular soundcard or speakers).
Playback has to start first. WASAPI can record silence, but it can’t record “nothing”.
The recording and playback volume sliders are “hidden” under the recording & playback meters and they should both be turned-up.
I’m on windows 11. Set Host to WASAPi, Playback to speaker, Recording to speaker loopback, and when I try to record I get a -9996 error. The volumes under the VU meters are set at 54 and 50. Gary David
This page says error -9996 can be caused by the wrong number of channels (Both Windows and Audacity should probably set to stereo for loopback, even if the audiobook is mono.
Or might be caused by having Exclusive Mode enabled.
