I need to leave a mic i/p open for long periods (hours) but only record when the audio is above a settable level. Will audacity (or any other sw ) do this?
(It happens all the time in spy stories, but that is not what this is for!)

Of course you’re not after incriminating evidence. Why would anyone want that?
Audacity > Edit > Preferences > Recording > Sound Activated Recording.
