Record on SAME track, not new. Default setting wrong?

Im using a MAC Mojave OS Version 10.14.3
Audacity Version 2.0.5

My question and issue is very simple but I cant figure it out.
When I record, it ALWAYS opens up a new track, vs letting me continue recording in the same track.
The manual says the default is supposed to continue recording in the same track but this isnt the case.
I must have pressed something on accident but its been this for as long as I can remember.

The only solution I’ve been able to find (which sucks and is very tedious) is to go to transport>append record every single time I want to add anything new (sound effects etc).

If I dont, it adds each new sound to a new track. Every new sound. So thats a LOT of tracks when I want them all on one.

ARGHHHHH.

Please help

Thanks,
Jason

The current version of Audacity is 2.3.0, and is available via the Audacity website: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/mac/
In Audacity 2.3.0, the default record behaviour is to append to the current track. (“Shift + Record” to record to a new track).

In the old 2.0.5 version of Audacity, the default behaviour was the other way round - “Shift + Record” to append to the current track.
