Record/Listen function stopped working

Thank you for your great Audacity software. I’ve been using it about 2 years now but the Record/Listen function suddenly stopped working. I’m using Windows 10 Pro - 64 bit and have 16GB RAM, with a Behringer UMC202HD. I’m recording guitar, vocal, keys, etc. Everything has been great until recently. It freezes when I hit Record, or, if I change the settings (per Audacity suggestions) it will record but I can’t hear any previous tracks. I’ve tried all the suggested options, upgraded and reinstalled Audacity 2.4.2, even reinstalled Windows and reinstalled the Behringer. Also deleted unused tracks, wondering if there is a Cap on how many tracks are allowed. Still, nothing has changed. I see others in your Forum with similar problems in the past. I’ve tried all of your suggestions. Any new recommendations? This is my first time to your Forum and first time seeing your Donate button. I will gladly donate, hoping I can get up and running. Thank you, again, for any help.

The first thing to check is the settings in the Device Toolbar.

Thank you, Steve. It appears, when Windows did an update, I needed to change from MME to Windows Direct Sound. It’s working but I now have a new problem; I can playback in headphones thru the Behringer but it freezes when I try to record. I can record, but only if the previous tracks playback thru my Speakers which, obviously, would create feedback when using a microphone. Any thoughts? Your help and knowledge is most appreciated.

Check in the Windows Sound settings that the Behringer device is set to operate at the same sample rate (preferably 44100) in both the Playback tab and the Recording Tab.
