Hi.
I just bought two “M-audio 44” pci soundcards. The cards has 4 in’s and out’s channels each. My question is, can I record 8 tracks simultaneous? And how? It is for a band, so there is 2 vocals, guitar, bas, drums (electrical), saxophone, piano - and it would be cool to be able in different tracks, but I can’t figure out how to set audacity up for it.
Nobody knows how to record more than one track at once?
It all depends on the sound card drivers.
Audacity can only record from one “device” at a time. Some multi-channel sound cards use a single multi-channel device driver (the nice way to do it). This will generally appear in the recording device options as “multi” or something like that. Other sound cards use multiple stereo drivers (bad) and Audacity will only be able to access one of these device drivers at a time.
The settings in Audacity for selecting the device is “Edit menu > Preferences > Audio I/O”
You will also see the option for selecting the number of channels to record there.
With some drivers Audacity is able to record 1 channel, 2 channels or “all” channels (but not 3 channels, 4 channels…) so if you find a multi-channel option, try setting the number of recording channels to 8.
We would like to know which multi-channel sound cards people use successfully with Audacity, but no-one ever tells us, so if you do get it working, please let us know.
