what setting should i hsve in preferance to record tracks from a cassette tape?i have the tape deck connected to the line in on my sound card but i just have to know if i have the preferances configged tight.thanks…

When I xfrd my tapes I had the project rate at 44.1kHz abd left the Audacity default of 32-bit floating for capture and edit (stereo of course). On Export, I exported to WAV using Audacity to downample at 44.1kHz 16-bit stereo (CD Red Book standard).
Just the same settings that I used for my LP xfrs - and now for FM capture.

Sadly no. Many years ago I had assembled a reasonable collection of 78s, painstakingly collected from jumble sales etc. - but when I left home to go to University my parents kindly threw all my stuff out, including my 78s 
As you can see I still feel the pain of loss, even after all these years …

Could you expand on this answer for me waxcylinder?
EG once I have my audio cassette playing where to I feed the output wires on my PC?
I see the Microphone and Speaker holes on one side of my PC and then what look like two round holes to feed sound in on the other side.
So where should I plug the external feed from my cassette player?
and what am I likely to see on my PC screen after that?
Will a soundfile of MP3 or Wav automatically form to accommodate new incoming sound?

well i use the "line in "on rthe soundcard…this is the same input thats used 4 the microphone…hope that helps.

as lenny (coonsanders) says use the line in on your PC.
But if you have a laptop it may be that you don’t have a line in only a mic in - Do NOT use the mic in for the input from the tape deck, the signal will be high in level. Instead if this is the case you will need to buy an external soundcatd - see this thread: http://audacityteam.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=9477

Thanks for that help but have some other major dramas holding back at the moment, like why does my PC refuse to play audio and video sound sometimes???
If you have any ideas on any switches that can be flicked to sort this problem short of rebooting PC it would be good?
