Random hangs?

XP V2.1.1 Keep getting hangs requiring quite and restore. Happens while playing, usually zoomed in with screen scrolling. When I stop the playback, that’s when it hangs. I attached a log from one if it’s any help?

Thanks for the log but it doesn’t show anything except the orphan block files that are to be expected after a crash or force quit.

This isn’t a known problem.

How long are the tracks and how many tracks are there? How do you start playback and how do you stop playback?

What audio device is selected as playback device in Device Toolbar?

Gale

Length and number of tracks varies greatly between crashes. Pretty much random in nature. Using either the play button or space bar. The Interface host is “MME” and the Device is the soundcard in my labtop called “SigmaTel Audio” (w channel stereo mix setting).

BTW, the computer is very stable otherwise with all other programs.

Does the problem happen if you don’t zoom in?

What is the make and model number of the laptop?

Gale

It’s a Dell Vostro 1500 - 2Ghz w/2GB RAM
I usually don’t edit if not zoomed in to some level. I’ll have to test it unzoomed for you.

Can you double-check you have these SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio, v.5.10.0.5515_RC22-WHQL, A11 drivers?

If the problem has only just started happening, perhaps you could try reinstalling those drivers.

Gale

Thanks, haven’t updated those drivers since I got the comp. Will do and see if any difference.

Updated drivers, hangs still happen at times. I force close and restore with restart of program.

Uploaded a screen shot. Note playback levels hung as though still playing but at bottom it says “stopped”? Also play button is recessed.

Think I was moving the cursor or scrolling at the time while playing back track if that’s any help.

So has this only just started happening? If yes, did you change anything on the system related to audio?

Do you mean that you used arrow keys during playback to move the green playhead cursor?

Please describe exactly how you scroll during playback. By default Audacity scrolls playback automatically when the playhead reaches the right-hand side of the visible project. Do you see that automatic scroll happening?

There may not be much you can do other than experiment.

You could CTRL + A then Tracks > Resample… to the project rate showing at bottom left of Audacity. Having one track at a different sample rate as shown in your screenshot will not help.

Possibly if you look at Edit > Preferences…, “Recording” section and increase “Audio to buffer” above 100 milliseconds it may help. That setting affects playback too.

Using Windows DirectSound host instead of MME might help.

If you have other audio applications running such as Skype or a web browser player, try turning them off.

I think I was planting the cursor with the mouse as I heard the spot I wanted to edit, or maybe drawing the selection with the mouse. Either way was playing the track at the time. I have noticed that sometimes when zoomed in and using the quick-play, the screen doesn’t scroll. Always does with play however.

I’ll try your suggestions and keep testing. Thanks so much for the help!

None of those are problems I am aware of.

Perhaps you could also open Task Manager (CTRL + SHIFT + ESC) and monitor CPU use and memory remaining. If you are on high CPU usage with little memory remaining Audacity could become unresponsive.

Also some of these issues could be a video driver issue. Could you perhaps visit http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/vostro-1500/drivers and check if you have downloaded and installed the two available video drivers.
