Raising audio of action sound effects.

Hello I’ve been trying to find a work around for this for the last 6 or so hours to no avail. I’ve got an 15 minute audio clip and i’m trying to find a way to raise the audio of the sound effects; punches, kicks ext, with out raising the audio of the sound track and dialog. At first I was hoping I could do a reverse Noise reduction where I can just take a sample of a kick and punch and raise it’s level, but I no longer think that is doable. I’ve been currently working with sliders in the equalizer setting thinking there should be a way to mess with the levels to make the punch and kicks impacts louder while muting everything else and then I could just mix that with the original track to give the FX a little more punch, a little extra kick, if you will. But my lack of knowledge of Audio is making it painfully slow and i’m not even sure if what i’m trying to do is even doable. So if anyone can lend me a hand or point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

:frowning: There’s probably not much you can do…

Do you know how an audio mixer works, or how muli-track mixing works? With a mixer you could have one microphone for the sound effects, or one microphone for each sound effect, and another mic for the dialog. Then you have a separate fader for each mixer input and you can adjust them up & down independently. Mulit-track recording works similarly, with a separate track (a separate recording that’s usually synchronized) for each effect/instrument/vocal. Then these tracks are mixed-down to stereo (or surround) in software, or with a hardware mixer.

“You can’t un-fry and egg or un-bake a cake, and you can’t un-mix sound.” …If you could un-mix, there would be no need for multi-track recording and no need for multiple microphones for live sound or recording.

With all of that out of the way…

  • You can use the Envelope Tool to boost*/cut the volume at certain times, when there is not talking and effects at the same time.

  • You can use the Equalization Effect to boost* the bass (in explosions for example) with very little effect on voice frequencies.

  • You can adjust the left & right independently (after “Split Stereo Track”).

  • You can try the Vocal Reduction and Isolation effect.

  • After boosting anything it’s a good idea to run the Amplify or Normalize effect (before exporting) to make sure you’re not clipping (distorting). That will bring every thing down together (if necessary) but if you’ve boosted the bass, the bass will be relatively louder and you can turn-up the playback volume (if necessary).

If you use spectral-selection, and are able to identify the effect, you can selectively amplify that part of the audio spectrum.
[ It’s going to take some time: you’d have to do that on each individual punch & kick ]

Okay thanks for the speedy replies still got a couple days till its due, well just try redubbing it, sounds like that will be easier, Thanks!
