For frequent users of spectral editing, or for newbies, there are too many steps to enable spectral selection, and then too many more to find the associated tools.
The ‘Enable Spectral Selection’ checkbox hidden in the Spectrogram Preferences dialogue should be replaced with a right-click menu item whenever the Spectrogram window is active. Then, while a spectral selection is active, all the Spectral… tools should also be available from the right-click menu.
If you use the spectral tools frequently, you can enable spectral selection in Preferences: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/spectrograms_preferences.html
Spectral Selection will then be enabled by default.
You can also make “Spectrogram view” the default - see “Default view mode”: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/tracks_preferences.html
or for quick switching between Waveform view and Spectrogram view you can create a Macro containing the “Set Track Visuals” command, and (optionally) create a keyboard shortcut to run the macro.
Keyboard shortcuts can also be created for each of the “spectral edit” effects that you use frequently (See: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/keyboard_preferences.html)
Longer term: It’s likely that the spectral edit effects will be replaced by a more integrated and more powerful form of spectral editing, so it’s unlikely that there will be many changes to the current version.
