Questions about Play, Pause, Looping

Hi

I apologize if this is a dumb question or has been asked before. I’m fairly new at using Audacity.
For example…
I made a 15-second AUP file for the intro to Redemption Song by Bob Marley to learn on guitar.
Ok, so I press “play” then hit “pause” to work on the first few notes of the first 5 seconds.
When I press “play” again, it goes back to the beginning of the song instead of continuing from where I hit “pause.” This happens whether I have looping enabled or not. I must be missing something obvious, I think.

A follow-up question. Is there a practical way to play/pause/loop single or two notes? Let’s say I cannot figure out the first note(s) to the song, and I need to keep looping until I find the note(s) on the guitar.
So, it’s a very short segment; maybe a second or two that I might want to keep looping.
I might have a longer passage (15 seconds like Redemption Song or a whole song), but I need to keep looping the first note until I find it. Then the second note and so on. This seems a bit difficult to do with such short fragments.
It could be a MP3 file from my laptop or if I make an AUP file.
I hope my questions are clear enough.
Thank you
Andrew

I don’t know… I wonder if there’s a “music learning” application with those kinds of features…

But GoldWave ($60 after free trial) has 3 configurable Play buttons that can loop, etc.

Use the shortcut X instead (for both pause and restart) - think of it as “X marks the spot”, and that’s precisely why X was chosen for that shortcut.

Good old Transcribe! Or the excellent SongMaster Pro will probably be more suitable for music practice on desktop. SMP has speed up training as well as flexible looping.

Thank you for the replies.

Yes, “X” does work with one problem.
If I play a 15-second segment for 5 seconds, hit X(stop), then X again, it starts from the 5-second mark. Perfect!
But…after a few more seconds of playing or when the segment finishes (15 seconds), hitting X (or play again) starts from the very last used X spot.
There does not seem to be a way to restart from the beginning of the song/AUP file, without dragging the cursor back to the beginning of the song.

Perhaps this is by design, or I am missing something obvious again

I have downloaded Transcribe (not purchased yet), but have not explored all of its features. It seems to be about the same as Audacity.

I hadn’t heard of the other 2 apps. Those are a bit pricey for my needs, but I may test them out.

I mostly just need something to easily loop, play/pause/rewind for learning guitar at an upper beginner level and I definitely need a user-friendly app for transcribing, ear training, working out riffs, chord sequences etc.

Thank you again
Andrew

Try using “P” to pause and unpause (instead of the spacebar).

(This may or may not be what you’re looking for… And for what it’s worth, I’m also pretty confused by the playback and looping options in Audacity, so you’re not alone.)

p.s.: this shortcut works on the Mac version - I’m making the assumption that it’s the same on Windows.

Thank you.

I think the Pause (P) helps. I need to study this more. I hadn’t realized about all the keyboard shortcuts.

Basically, what I want to do is create super short loops.
Most guitar instructors say ”The last thing you hear is what’s in your mind”

So, looping 1 note at a time is optimal. Loop it until you find it on the guitar.

Play/loop the next note. Find that note and so on…until you work out the riff/chord, etc.
I suppose that there is some leeway in looping a few (2/3) notes at a time.
Of course, this all involves a lot of going back and forth with your hands between the guitar and keyboard and trying to advance/create loops as the riff progresses.

I can look at the other apps recommended too, but I suspect that there is no quick and easy way to this.

Thanks again for the helpful forum
