question about recording levels

hi
I seem to have a problem recording…the levels are very inconsistent…the above wave is a thin line while the bottom wave is too big…it might be a config issue but im not sure…im on windows 64 bit
the turntable is numark and the receiver is onkyo thanks

The top waveform is the left and the bottom is the right. When you play it back is that what you hear? A very quiet left channel?

Try swapping-around the left & right RCA connections at various points to track-down the source of the problem. If the sound out of your receiver is OK, the turntable and connections into the receiver are obviously OK.

the turntable is numark and the receiver is onkyo thanks

And the tape-outputs are connected to line-in on a regular soundcard on a desktop/tower computer??? Or is this a USB turntable???

hi its a standard turntable…no usb…I don’t believe its not tape/line in…its just line in and the speakers are just speaker inputs…this is a desk top pc

I don’t believe its not tape/line in…its just line in…

OK, good. (Most laptops only have mono mic-in.) But you’re connected to tape-out on the receiver?

What happens when you swap the left & right connections out of the receiver? If the problem switches, the output from your receiver is bad. If the pro problem stays the same with the left (top waveform) weak, the cable is bad or your soundcard is bad. (It’s not likely a software problem.)

and the speakers are just speaker inputs

Let’s forget about the computer for a moment… What about the sound from the stereo speakers connected (or headphones) to your Onkyo? Is that coming equally out of both speakers?

(Those are speaker outputs… Sound comes out of the soundcard (or receiver) and into the speakers. )

hi
I just installed a new software called advanced system care and I believe that’s whats screwing things up…have you ever heard of it?

This one?

I’ve never heard of system software creating problems such as this. There have been times when a virus protection package tried to protect the user from Audacity producing sound files, but that’s usually the difference between having music and not. It doesn’t distort the show, you just don’t get one.

I’ve never heard of distortion like this.

I think the bad news is we are not going to to be able to help other than by guessing at it. For most servicing, we build your computer in our imagination as you describe it and then know how that machine is supposed to act. We can’t do that with you, or we might, but it may take weeks.

Most non-tech computer users have a relative or part-time neighbor or hire out a company that can show you what’s going on and fix it if needed.

One other note. Audacity does not apply filters, effects or corrections during recording. Whatever Windows gives to Audacity, that’s what Audacity records.

Koz

well guys I think I found the problem…sort of…my receiver was the culprit…i played a into the computer and I heard the music from my speakers…so I think the receiver was bad…now I have to get audacity to receive the music…so the next step is to config audacity to record the music…how do I do that?

lenny

so the next step is to config audacity to record the music…how do I do that?

The same was as you were doing it before you (apparently) fixed your hardware problem…
