Punching in and out

'm new to Audacity. On previous hardware I could set two markers for where I wanted to punch in and out of a track to fix a part that didn’t sound optimal.

Is there a way to do that with Audacity or something effectively similar so I can correct a part of a vocal without undoing/redoing the whole track?

Audacity doesn’t have punch in or out, but you can create a new track under the old one with the Overdubbing tools. As if you wanted to sing three part harmony or lay down four guitar tracks by yourself.

Play the old track in your headphones and sing along with it. Just keep singing when you get to the flub. Stop and crossfade, slide it back and forth, etc. between the two tracks until it sounds good. The problem with punch-in is it destroys the old track.

Audacity will mix down your work to a single stereo track (if you want) when you Export.

You’ll need the Time Shift Tool (two sideways black arrows) and the Envelope Tool (two white arrows and bent blue line)
