Problems Recording DJ Mix

Hi,

I’m using HP envy 14 notebook PC with serato SL2 and I’m trying to record a mix but am having trouble recording, I have a RCA cable running from the microphone port on my PC to my mixer (Pioneer DJM 250) using its 2nd Aux space on the back.

My mixer is connect to my 2 technics SL-1210mk2 as well as my marrantz pm6004 amp

I am using audacity 2.0.5, I have my stereo mix set as default for my recording device in windows settings.

In audacity I have the audio host as MME the playback as Microsoft sound mapper, the recording as stereo mix and the line in as 2 stereo input channels.

When I record I get really a quiet recording that’s fuzzy

Yet I can play music from my laptop through my speakers using the RCA from the laptop to the mixer and the sound is perfect.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jon

A typical microphone signal is around 1000x smaller than “line level”. The signal from a mixer is typically around “line level”, so it is likely to massively overload a mic input and cause bad “fuzzy” distorted sound. You need to connect the Aux to a “Line” input. Many laptops do not have a “line in”. The usual solution is to use a USB sound card that has stereo line in connections. I use a Behringer UCA 202 with my mixing desk and that works very well for me. Other brands and models are available.
