problem with unaccepatble quality for spoken word recording

I have been using audacity for years with great success. I downloaded the new Audacity 2.0.5
“C:Program FilesAudacityaudacity.exe”
and I am using it with Windows Vista Home Basic

I have always been delighted with audacity…but I am getting a really tinny sound (unpleasant and it isn’t good enough) when recording spoken word tapes (I am transferring some old cassette tapes onto an mp3 format using audacity). This is obvious if I stop the record and play some back…it sounds completely different from the original. There must be some settings I can change to alter this…suggestions please.

I have tried recording from my ipad, and from a casette recorder…and I get the same problem with both.

I wondered if I had adjusted (inadvertently) some settings, so I deleted audacity and downloaded it again. But the problem is the same. I am using an ACER aspire 5735z computer to record it on.

Please advise how to sort this out

yes that sorted it for that one. I have since tried another computer…got the same problem but that solution didn’t work…can’t find the right bits to adjust…
