previous track is being recorded onto new track

Audacity version 2.0.5 exe installer Windows xp spk3

I started recording a new song today and when I started recording my 3rd track, Audacity decides to record a louder version of my previous track onto the 3rd track! I have been using audacity for awhile now and this has never happened before. I shut the program down, restarted my pc, uninstalled Audacity, reinstalled it and it is still doing the same thing. I even opened up another project and pressed record and it is doing the same thing. I opened up a new project and the same thing again. What can I do to fix this? I have tried everything and nothing but headaches. Please help!

Reinstalling Audacity doesn’t reinstall Audacity. Audacity leaves configuration files around that allow you to do an upgrade without having to put all your settings in again. This is the downside of doing that. Audacity came up from the install exactly where it left off.

It’s a setting. You are recording “What’s Playing On The Computer” instead of a Microphone, Line-In or USB service. Change in: Audacity > Edit > Preferences > Devices > Recording. It may say “Stereo-Mix” instead of “USB Audio Codec” or whatever your microphone is.

Omg! You are a genius! I don’t know how I overlooked that! Thank you so much!
