Are they USB or Bluetooth headphones?
Audacity is know to not play well with Bluetooth headphones on Mac.
After you plug the headphones in, do Transport > Rescan Audio Devices.

Rescan audio devices works! THANK YOU
You literally saved me. Thanks so much!
Hi all… I can’t seem to switch from “Built in output” to headphones when I plug mine in. I’ve tried restarting and also rescanning audio device to no avail. Any suggestions? very hard to monitor sounds on my computer speakers.
Also, noticed this forum is for Catalina and later but there seems to be no forum to address High Sierra so if this isn’t where to post, please let me know where to go for help! Thanks.
thanks in advance for any assistance.

Mac OS High Sierra, 10.13.6
Audacity Version, 2.4.2
What model of Mac are you using? What is the difference between “built-in output” and “headphone output”. Don’t you just plug headphones into the jack and that over-rides the speakers?
