I have major problems to keep the portable settings (audacity.cfg). I’ve been using AudacityPortable for years, but in the past 6 months the settings disappear. In the beginning only from time to time, now every time I close Audacity. The audacity.cfg is still there, but with the launch of AudacityPortable this file is being restored to factory settings and there is nothing I can do about it. I can copy a backupped file, but the moment I start Audacity, the cfg file is being reset again.
This is most annoying. Why is this and what can I do about it?
The “Portable Apps” version of Audacity is a modified version made by Portable Apps. We don’t know what modifications they have made, so we can’t really offer support for that product. For support with Portable Apps: http://portableapps.com/support
The original / genuine version of Audacity (from the Audacity team) can be used as a portable application. To do that, you need to download the ZIP version via the website: http://www.audacityteam.org/download/windows/
Unzip the file, and then create a “Portable Settings” folder within the same folder as where the “audacity.exe” file is located.
As I said, I don’t know details for the Portable Apps version, but from your description I suspect that a security product on your computer may be preventing the audacity.cfg file from updating - that’s my guess.
