Playing sound is very bad with Audacity on WIN11

Good evening team,

with the last free version of Audacity on win11 pro 64 version patch 58H2: my hw config is a recent pc tower AMD ryzen 9 6900HX, AMD FP7 main board, AMD Radeon 680M. WIN11 output sound is set to “Digital output”. Audacity sound read is set to “Audio Digital HDMI 13” . I use my TV HDMI for the HP. My pc is a new one. I did not install any addtional driver.

with that config, I can record a signal and read it. BUT the sound is “bad” compared to the source (UTUBE for example). even if I play with the gain, it is better but still bad and with distorsions.

my analyze is sound is : -sound played in UTUBE is ok so HDMI audio port is ok - sound can be recorded on Audacity so there is some signal to play on another player but if I exporting this recorded signal and play it on windows player, the sound is bad. - importing a mp3 and play it oin Audacity is ok.

  • recorded sound played on Audacity is bad to play on another player

→ I think there is an issue with the driver selected by Audacity for WIN11. indeed the setting if different on WIN11 and Audacity. if I select “Audio Digital HDMI 13” on WIN11 output sound, there is NO sound.

any ideas would be nice. I passed many hours and did not find a way. if somebody could list its setting for WIN11, would be helpful.

cheers

JPierre

This is probably a Windows problem. Turn off all “audio enhancements”. Search for “audio enhancements” in this forum to find how to do this.

If you are using Audacity 4: This software is in an early development state and by no means finished. Use Audacity 3.x for real work. Latest is 3.7.7, and I am still using 3.6.4.

Just to add, all genuine versions of Audacity are free.

The Audacity website offers commercial (paid) cloud hosting via audio.com, and may advertise other commercial products, but Audacity is entirely free.

While there very well could be a problem with Audacity (or the configuration of it), I would be a lot more suspicious of the driver. Especially a “generic” driver from Windows. You might want to investigate updating the driver with the latest one from the hardware manufacturer.

banco, you are right. the recorded sound is very bad (distorsion, noise) with MME and directsound but with “WASAPI” is it good. This setting can be set in Audacity 3.7.7. thank you all for your kind support. Jean-Pierre
